FINALLY! Gay Marriage Legal in Australia!

Postby helen2b » Thu Dec 07, 2017 3:39 am

Finally, after suffering through a hateful two month long campaign and a postal survey, which put the validity of same-sex couple's relationships up for debate to the general public, the Australian House of Representatives finally passed our same-sex marriage bill today, Dec. 7. Far from being a day that will live in infamy, today will be one of joy and love. The final vote was almost unanimous...only 4 dissenters out of 157. The bill has already been passed by the Senate, so will now go to our Governor General, to be given royal assent and will come into effect 28 days later. So proud to be Australian at the moment. Below is a link to 2 short videos of Parliament. One just before the final vote and one after. Our conservative Prime Minister is beaming and the public gallery breaks into song...amazing. Brought a tear to my eye. :D

That is very good news! That was intermittently on the news over here the last couple of weeks, it's a bit of common sense, congratulations Australia!

While the national survey thing would have bugged me were I Australian, it is nice after the fact that no one can say the majority don’t support this while keeping a straight face, or without proving themselves utterly fucking absurd. I know the vote wasn’t binding on legislators, but it would have been hard for them to brush aside that result.

I agree Kris. We had an 80% turnout for the voluntary survey and out of that 80%, 61.6% voted in favour of same sex marriage. Best news yet though was that not one, "Religious Freedom (licence to discriminate)" amendments made it into the bill. So we're not going to be having any bakers or florists refusing to provide services to gay couples.
